Doctor of Nursing Philosophy (Ph. D)

With a Ph. D in Nursing, you will be prepared to use assessment and evaluation strategies, facilitate learning, and design and evaluate curriculums and programs. This is a terminal degree many nurse educators and researchers pursue.

Job Duties and Career Opportunities for Ph. D in Nursing Graduates

Most nurses who hold a Ph. D work as nursing instructors for colleges, universities, and hospitals. With this degree, you can find employment with research institutions, philanthropy organizations, medical laboratory companies, and healthcare associations. Also, many Ph. D nurses write questions for the NCLEX test and other testing facilities.

Ph. D in Nursing Educational Requirements

The majority of nursing programs require an active RN license, a Master’s degree as an advanced practice nurse, and letters of recommendation. There are only a few programs in the U.S. that accept non-nursing students. These programs are called direct entry Ph. D programs, offered at the University of South Carolina and the University of Texas in Austin.

The four areas of advanced practice nursing include: nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, and clinical nurse specialist. A Ph. D in one of these areas is typically four to five years in length. In addition, some universities require that you practice as an RN for one or more years prior to the application process.

Courses of Study of a Doctor of Nursing Philosophy Program

Doctoral programs require a dissertation before awarding the terminal degree. Typical courses of study in a Ph. D program include theory and practice, research methods, educating adults, curriculum design and program evaluation, strategies in nursing education, leadership and ethics, and administration. Also, these classes vary, depending on the school and focus area or specialty.

Ph. D in Nursing Professional Salaries

Faculty salaries depend on your rank and the institution, ranging from $60,000 to $180,000 annually. A doctoral education provides you with a wide range of opportunities and pay commensurate the level of your responsibilities.
